Michael started in estate agency with Winkworth in their Knightsbridge office in September 1976 as a junior negotiator. By 1979 Michael was appointed manager of the Winkworth Fulham office and when the company converted to a franchise business, he became the first franchisee within the group, purchasing the Fulham office in 1981, opening a second branch in Chiswick in 1984. By 1986, having run two very successful franchise businesses, Michael became managing director of Winkworth. He sold his franchises in the early 90’s and left the Winkworth group in April 1992. He joined the Legal & General Group in September 1992 where he was instrumental in setting up Legal & General Franchising Ltd. L&G sold its franchise network to Martin & Co Plc on October 31st 2014 and Michael became their Group Managing Director on completion of the transaction and left the group in August 2016, having successfully integrated the two companies with an anticipated branch turnover of £79 million in 2016.
Michael joined the Ombudsman for Estate Agents (now The Property Ombudsman Service) as a director in November 2003 and became vice chairman in December 2015. Michael was a member TPO Disciplinary Standards Committee from 2008-2012 and sat as a TPO board representative on the TPO Council as well as their Finance and General Purposes Committee. TPO streamlined their governance in July 2018 and he is now a non-executive director at TPO as well chairing the Industry Forum. He became a trustee of the Estate Agents Foundation (Agents Giving) in 2010 and in December 2018, took over as Chairman. He has been chairman of Belvoir Group Plc since May 2019.
Michael is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the National Association of Estate Agents and a Member of the Association of Residential Lettings Agents.
